3 Signs Your Boat Cover is Ready for Retirement
Salt. Sun. Storms. Your boat cover’s seen it all — and if it’s looking worse for wear, it might be time to retire it before it lets you (and your boat) down.
1. It’s Faded and Flaking
If your cover’s gone from deep blue to dry grey, the UV has taken its toll. Fabric that’s brittle or cracking is past its prime — and no longer doing its job.
2. It’s Stretching or Sagging
A cover that’s ballooning in the breeze or pooling water like a kiddie pool is a cover that’s lost its shape. That means gaps, leaks, and premature ageing.
3. It Smells… Questionable
Can’t get rid of that mouldy, musty funk? Chances are the inner layers are starting to break down. And once mould moves in, it’s hard to evict.
What to Do Next:
- Inspect the damage: If there are small tears, busted eyelets or minor stitching issues, we may be able to repair it.
- Consider a custom replacement: We can match the fit and upgrade the material so it performs better and lasts longer.
Caring for Your Boat Cover
Proper care and maintenance can significantly extend the life of your boat cover. Here are a few fabric-friendly tips:
- Always allow your cover to dry completely before storing to prevent mould and mildew — storing it wet is like leaving bread in a humid pantry. Something gross is going to grow.
- Clean with mild soap and/or water only — harsh detergents or high-pressure cleaners can damage fabric coatings and the fabric itself. Always follow the manufacturers cleaning guidelines which will be dependent on what your boat cover is fabricated from. If in doubt, drop in or give us a quick call, we are always happy to help.
- Avoid folding along the same crease every time to reduce stress points in the material.
- Store your cover in a cool, dry place, preferably in a breathable bag or storage container.
- When having a cover fabricated or if you purchase off the shelf, always obtain important information such as the type of fabric used, the fabrics warranty details and cleaning/care guidelines. Our covers use heavy duty, industry specific, UV protective fabrics that come with 5-15 years warranty, we will always keep your information on file should you need to make a warranty claim on the fabric, provided all care guidelines have been followed.
- Inspect regularly for wear and tear, especially around seams, fixings, and high-stress areas. If you notice any wear and tear, repair as soon as possible. Always remove bird/bat droppings as soon as possible to reduce damage to the fabric.
By following these simple care guidelines, you’ll help ensure your boat cover stays protective, functional, and looking good for years to come.
Not sure if it’s ready for retirement? Bring it in — we’ll give it a no-BS assessment and help you decide what’s best.
