Why Your Tonneau Cover is Leaking (And What You Can Do About It)

If your ute tonneau is leaking like a sieve, it’s not just annoying — it’s a liability. Wet gear, rust risk, and the good old Aussie weather don’t mix well. Here’s why it’s happening — and what you can do about it.

1. Perished Seals or Stitching

Over time, exposure to UV rays and heat causes seals to break down and stitching to weaken. Water starts sneaking in around the seams, especially after heavy rain.

2. Stretched or Warped Fabric

Covers that have been over-tightened or left sagging can lose shape. Once the tension’s gone, water pools instead of running off — and gravity does the rest.

3. Old or Broken Fixings

Those trusty press studs, bungees or Velcro tabs eventually lose their grip. If your fixings don’t hold tight, you’re basically inviting the rain to hop in and make itself at home.

What You Can Do:

Quick Clean & Inspect: Look for small tears, missing stitching, worn-out clips, or sagging sections.

Patch or Replace: Minor holes and worn stitching can usually be patched or restitched. If it’s cracked, brittle, or full of holes — it may be time to replace.

Bring It In: At LJ Covers, we’ll take a look and give you an honest assessment. Sometimes it’s a quick repair, sometimes a remake is smarter — either way, we’ve got you covered.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Wait for the Storm

A tonneau that’s “only leaking a bit” today might be completely waterlogged next week. Prevention = cheaper than replacement.
