Welcoming the Next Generation: Work Experience at LJ Covers
At LJ Covers, we’re big believers in hands-on learning, passing on skills, and doing our part to support the future of our industry. That’s why we’re excited to share that we’ve welcomed Tahlia, a local high school student, into our workshop every Wednesday for work experience over the next few months!
Tahlia has joined us to learn the ropes of industrial textile fabrication, working directly alongside Jason to gain real-world, practical skills—and she’s hit the ground running.
Learning By Doing
In just a few short weeks, Tahlia has:
✔️ Mastered the art of eyeletting—she’s already a star when it comes to setting clean, even hardware across PVC and canvas.
✔️ Become confident with cutting—following patterns with precision, measuring materials, and prepping jobs for fabrication.
✔️ Jumped on the sewing machine—today she began fabricating her first industrial cover under Jason’s guidance!
It’s been fantastic to see her enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and genuine attention to detail. There’s something rewarding about seeing a student go from curious observer to capable contributor in such a short time.
Why It Matters
Work experience isn’t just about giving students something to do—it’s about opening doors, building confidence, and showing that trades like textile fabrication are skilled, creative, and full of career potential.
As an industry, we need to do more to promote these pathways, and supporting students like Tahlia is a step in the right direction. She’s gaining not just technical skills, but also learning the value of craftsmanship, time management, and teamwork in a real workshop environment.
Looking Ahead
We’ll continue to mentor Tahlia over the coming months and look forward to seeing how her confidence and skills grow. Whether she goes on to pursue a trade in construction, textile fabrication or something completely different—she’ll always have a foundation of practical, hands-on experience to build from.
