In short: a custom shade sail is measured to your actual span, made from either shade cloth rated for UV block or fully waterproof PVC depending on whether you want filtered sun or a dry space, and tensioned hard enough that to avoid ponding.
It anchors to a mix of building structures and posts, each of which has to carry the load in a storm.

Why Most Shade Sails Fail Early
Shade sails do not usually fail because the fabric wore out. They fail because something around the fabric was wrong from the start.
- Undersized fixing points: the sail is fine, but the post or bracket it is tied to cannot take the load in a storm.
- Not enough tension: a sail that sags collects water, and water is heavy. Ponding is what tears corners out.
- Wrong shape for the span: a square sail forced across an awkward area leaves gaps where the sun still gets through at the time of day you actually want shade.
- No allowance for wind: Brisbane storms load a sail hard and fast. If the design does not account for that, the weakest fitting decides the outcome.
Getting these right at the measuring stage is most of the job. It is also the part a flat pack sail cannot do for you.

Different areas need different thinking. A pool sail is mostly about UV protection over the water and the surrounds at midday. A patio or deck sail is about the hours you actually sit out there, which is often late afternoon when the sun is low and coming in sideways.
