Commercial Shade Structures, School Awnings and Outdoor Shelters

Shade and covers for schools, councils, clubs and venues, made In Brisbane
Shade sails for schools, councils and clubs see more constant use than a typical backyard installation. We use UV-rated fabric that holds its strength and colour under sustained sun exposure, so the sail or awning stays in good condition for longer. We handle both installation and repairs, so if a sail is damaged or needs adjusting down the track, it doesn’t need to be replaced outright.
We manufacture and replace commercial shade covers and awnings at our factory in Redland Bay.
If your project specification nominates a fabric or a performance standard, we work to it. If it does not, we can recommend what is used based on the exposure the cover will actually see and supply the manufacturer’s published data behind the recommendation.
Material specification and sourcing
Please note, we are a manufacturer, not a fabric mill or certifier. What we bring is specification judgement and supply access: knowing which construction suits the application, sourcing it from a supplier who can certify it, and manufacturing it correctly. Where a project specification nominates a material, we work to it. Where it does not, we recommend against the exposure conditions and supply the data to back the recommendation.
| MATERIAL CLASS | SPECIFIED FOR | TYPICAL SITE APPLICATION |
| Knitted shade cloth | Dimensionally forgiving, will not run or fray when cut. Airflow retained while UV is reduced. Shade factor selected to the requirement | Play area and walkway shade, spectator and yard shade, carpark shade |
| Woven shade cloth | Higher dimensional stability and a denser weave than knitted. Holds a tensioned shape more predictably | Larger tensioned spans, structures where shape is held long term |
| Coated woven polyethylene | Impermeable, weldable, UV stable. Hot air and wedge weldable, so seams are continuous rather than perforated | Waterproof shelter covers, walkway covers, weather covers |
| Reinforced PVC | High tear strength and abrasion resistance, weldable, available in blockout and translucent. | Weather screens, drop blinds, enclosed shelters, café screens |
| PVC coated mesh | Airflow retained while wind and glare are reduced. Lower wind load than a solid panel | Screening, wind reduction, boundary and fence screening |
| Clear and tinted PVC | Visibility retained while the space is closed to weather | Café and venue screens, viewing panels in drop blinds |
| Fire retardant grades | Flame retardant treatment or inherently FR construction, supplied with the manufacturer’s certification to the standard your specification nominates | Venues, public buildings and covered areas where the specification calls for it |
| Acrylic canvas | Solution dyed for colour retention, breathable, traditional awning handling | Fixed awnings, hoods and canopies where appearance matters |
What determines your specification
Six things decide which material and construction is right, and we work through them with you rather than quoting off a product name.
- Exposure. Full sun all day is a different specification from a partly sheltered courtyard, and coastal salt load changes hardware selection as well as fabric.
- Span and fixing. How far the fabric has to reach, and what it is being tensioned against, drive both the material class and the reinforcement pattern.
- Wind. An open site takes wind load a courtyard does not. A mesh or a shade cloth passes air that a solid panel has to resist.
- Shade factor required. Play areas, spectator areas and carparks are not the same requirement, and the shade factor is a specification decision rather than a default.
- Compliance. If your project nominates a fire rating, a shade factor or a material standard, tell us the standard it names and we will source material certified to it and pass the certificate through with the goods.
- Service life expected. A three year event installation and a twenty year school structure justify different material grades, and we will say plainly which one we are quoting.
Who we make commercial shade for
School and childcare shade
Covered walkways, play area shade, eating area covers, sandpit and equipment shade, and replacement fabric on existing structures. School work usually has to happen inside a holiday window, so tell us the window and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it before you commit to it.
Council and community facility shade
Park, playground and community facility shade covers, and replacement fabric on structures already installed. We can work from your asset register dimensions or attend site to measure.
Sports club and grandstand covers
Grandstand and seating covers, dugout and bench shade, and covers for club facilities.
Cafe, restaurant and venue shade
Shade and weather cover for outdoor dining, courtyards and service areas, made to the space and fixed to what is there.
Event and outdoor venue shade
Shade structures, covers and fabric for outdoor event spaces.
Commercial outdoor shelters
Shelter covers for waiting areas, walkways, loading and public areas, made to the structure.
Outdoor blinds and weather screens
Drop blinds and weather screening for commercial outdoor areas where the space needs closing down in weather.
Repairs, re-covers and replacement fabric
Where a structure is sound and only the fabric has gone, a re-cover is normally the cheaper path than replacing the whole thing. We restitch, reweld, patch and replace fittings, including on covers we did not make.
How we work
- We consult on site. We attend and measure the actual opening, machine or space — including the racking, beams, control panels and services already in the way.
- We specify the material. Against the real conditions: dust, fumes, washdown, temperature separation, hot work, static or food contact.
- We manufacture in Redland Bay. Cut and made in our own facility, not ordered in and re-badged.
- We supply it ready to install. With the track, fixings, hanging detail and any handling instructions your crew or maintenance contractor needs. Installation and on-site delivery can also be arranged by LJ Covers.
If your site needs ongoing cover maintenance or periodic replacement as part of a larger operation, we can talk through a standing arrangement rather than treating every job as a one-off.
Working with schools, councils and facilities teams
- Working to your window: School, council and venue work runs to terms, closures and event dates. Give us the date it has to be finished and we will tell you before you commit whether it is achievable.
- Site measure: We attend site to measure and consult. For work further out we can work from drawings, an asset register, or measurements taken by your team to a template we supply.
- Documentation: Material certificates, safety data sheets and the usual compliance documentation are available where your procurement process requires them. Tell us what your process needs and we will supply it with the quote rather than after it.
Repairs on structures we did not supply
Most of the shade work we are asked about is replacement fabric on something already standing. That is normal work for us.
