Containment liners and technical fabrics for mining and heavy industry

LJ Covers manufactures containment liners, tank liners, dust and spillage containment, acoustic screening and machinery covers for mining, quarrying, processing and heavy industry sites across Queensland and interstate.

The work starts with the material. A cover or liner only performs as well as the fabric it is made from, and mine site conditions rule out most general-purpose material — abrasion from bulk handling, chemical exposure from process water and reagents, static build-up in dust-laden atmospheres, hot work nearby, UV loading that runs all year. Specifying the wrong fabric is not a cosmetic problem. It is a containment failure, a compliance exposure, or an unplanned shutdown.

We hold supply relationships across the Australian and imported technical textile market and source to the requirement: geomembranes and geotextiles, FRAS and fire-retardant fabrics, anti-static, acoustic, potable-contact, silicone-coated low-friction, chemically resistant, impermeable and breathable constructions. If the specification calls for a material we do not hold, we source it and supply the manufacturer’s technical data sheet and test certification with the finished item.

Manufactured at our Redland Bay facility.

Materials Specifications & Sourcing

We are a manufacturer, not a fabric mill and not a certifier. What we bring is specification judgement and supply access: knowing which construction suits the application, sourcing it from a supplier who can certify it, and manufacturing it correctly. Where a project specification nominates a material, we work to it. Where it doesn’t, we recommend against the exposure conditions and supply the data to back the recommendation.

MATERIAL CLASSSPECIFIED FOR TYPICAL SITE APPLICATIONS
GeomembranesImpermeable barrier. Sourced in HDPE, LLDPE, PVC and reinforced polyethylene depending on chemical exposure, subgrade and weld method.Tank and dam liners, bunding, leachate and process water containment, tailings and evaporation ponds.
GeotextilesPermeable. Woven and non-woven constructions for separation, filtration, drainage and cushioning.Protection layer beneath a geomembrane, subgrade separation, haul road and drainage applications.
FRAS — fire retardant anti-staticCombined fire-retardant and static-dissipative performance. Supplied with the manufacturer’s certification to the standard nominated in your specification.Underground and confined applications, conveyor and transfer point curtains, brattice and ventilation screening.
Fire retardant (standalone)Flame-retardant treatment or inherently FR construction, where static dissipation is not a requirement.Welding and hot work screens, workshop curtains, covers near cutting and grinding.
Anti-static (standalone)Static dissipation in dust-laden or flammable atmospheres, where fire retardancy is handled separately.Dust containment in bulk handling, chute and transfer point curtains, silo and bin covers.
Acoustic fabricsMass-loaded barrier and absorptive constructions for noise attenuation, specified to the reduction the site needs.Plant and generator enclosures, crusher screening, boundary and neighbour noise curtains, temporary works.
Potable-contact fabricsMaterials certified as suitable for contact with drinking water. Certified to AS/NZS 4020Potable water tank liners, camp and village water storage, remote site water supply.
Silicone-coated, low surface frictionLow coefficient of friction and elevated temperature resistance. Material keeps moving across the surface instead of hanging up on it.Chute and hopper liners, transfer point curtains, expansion joints, material flow surfaces.
Chemical-resistant
Selected against the specific reagent, concentration, pH and temperature — not a general “chemical resistant” claim.
Process water, reagent and slurry containment, bunding under chemical storage.
ImpermeableZero-permeability construction where nothing is to pass through the barrier in either direction.Containment liners, bunding, spill capture, weather-sealed covers.
BreathableAllows moisture vapour to escape while shedding water — prevents condensation trapping under the cover.Machinery and plant covers during standdown, equipment in transit or long-term storage.

What we manufacture for mine sites

Storage & stockpile liners

Liners for stockpiles and bulk storage areas need to handle constant load, weather exposure, and the abrasive nature of whatever material sits on them. A liner that tears or shifts under load isn’t just a maintenance headache, it’s a containment failure that can mean material loss or environmental risk.

We fabricate liners to the actual stockpile area or storage structure, choosing fabric weight and construction based on what’s being stored and how the site handles it, loaded and unloaded by machinery, exposed to weather, or under cover.

Stockpile and bulk storage liners are specified against the material being stored and the handling method. Abrasive ores and aggregates call for a heavier-weight, higher tear-strength construction than a covered dry store. Where the liner sits over a prepared subgrade, a non-woven geotextile beneath it protects the membrane from puncture. We supply both layers as one package rather than leaving you to co-ordinate two suppliers.

Tank liners

Tank liners contain liquids, slurries, or other materials inside storage and process tanks, and the fit needs to be exact. A liner that bunches, wrinkles, or doesn’t seal properly at the seams can fail under the weight and movement of what’s inside it.

Every liner is made to the measured tank — shell dimensions, inlet and outlet positions, agitator and internal fittings, and the fixing detail at the rim.

Material selection depends on what the tank holds. Process water, slurries and reagents each call for a different chemical-resistance profile, and we specify against the reagent, concentration and operating temperature rather than a general resistance claim. For potable and camp water storage we source fabric certified for drinking water contact and supply the certification with the liner. AS/NZS 4020

Dust & spillage containment

Dust escaping a site isn’t just a nuisance, it’s often a compliance issue, and spillage containment matters just as much for material recovery as it does for site safety. Containment covers control both, keeping dust down during loading, unloading, and transport, and catching spillage before it spreads.

We build these to suit the specific point of the operation they’re protecting, a conveyor transfer point, a loading bay, or a stockpile edge, rather than a generic cover that only partially does the job.

Where the containment sits in a dust-laden atmosphere, static build-up is the risk that matters, and anti-static or FRAS material is specified accordingly. At transfer points and chutes, silicone-coated low-friction fabric keeps material moving across the surface instead of building up against it — which is usually the reason a standard curtain fails early. Where the specification calls for FRAS, we source certified material and supply the certification with the job.

Machinery covers

Heavy equipment left exposed between shifts or during extended downtime picks up dust, moisture, and general wear. A custom machinery cover protects it properly, fitted to the actual shape of the equipment rather than draped over loosely.

We build covers around the specific machine, working with access points and components that need to stay clear even with the cover fitted. For sites with multiple machines needing covers, we can work through them as a batch for consistency.

For equipment standing down for an extended period, a breathable construction matters more than a waterproof one. A fully impermeable cover over warm machinery traps condensation against the surface it is meant to protect. We specify breathable where the equipment needs to dry and impermeable where it needs sealing, and say which we are recommending and why.

Acoustic Screening & Enclosures

Noise is a compliance condition on most sites and a neighbour problem on the rest. Acoustic curtains and enclosure panels are manufactured from mass-loaded barrier and absorptive constructions and specified to the attenuation the site is working to.

We manufacture and fit the screening. Where a project needs the noise reduction verified by measurement, that sits with an acoustic consultant — we work to the target they set.

Working with us – capability and compliance

Manufacturing

All fabrication is carried out at our Redland Bay facility. Maximum single-piece fabrication is upto 40m diametre, with larger assembly capability upon application. Typical lead time from confirmed measurement is dependant on urgency and complexity, but can be completed within days, with shutdown and breakdown work prioritised against the window available. If your site has a shutdown window or a tight schedule to work within, tell us upfront and we’ll plan the job around it rather than treating it like a standard lead time.

Material certification

We source from suppliers who certify their material and we supply the technical data sheet and test certification with the finished item. Where your specification nominates a standard or a named product, we work to it. Where it doesn’t, we recommend a material against the exposure conditions and provide the supporting data so your engineer or compliance team can review it. We do not issue engineering certification ourselves.

Installation

We manufacture and supply. Installation is carried out by your site crew or your nominated contractor, and we provide the fitting detail, fixing schedule and any handling instructions the item needs so it goes in correctly.

Packing and transport

Large-format liners, membranes and covers are damaged more often in transit than in service. We build custom pallets and crating to suit each item — sized to the folded or rolled dimensions, with the fold pattern and packing method set so the material arrives without creasing, abrasion or coating damage, and can be handled on site with the equipment available.

Delivery Australia-wide from Redland Bay. Remote and regional freight is itemised separately in the quote so the fabrication cost stays transparent.

How We Work

  • We consult on site. We attend, measure the actual tank, structure, stockpile area or equipment, and assess the exposure conditions the material has to survive.
  • We specify the material. Working to your specification where you have one, or recommending against the exposure conditions and supplying the supporting data where you don’t.
  • We manufacture in Redland Bay. Cut and made in our own facility, not ordered in and re-badged.
  • We pack it to arrive intact. Custom packaging, pallets and crating built to the item, sized to the folded dimensions and to what your site can lift.
  • We install, or we hand it over. Covers, curtains, dust containment and machinery covers we fit ourselves. Liners go to your crew or a specialist liner installer, with the jointing and fixing detail supplied.

Our business recently got LJ Covers to make a large industrial strength 15m x 10m 16oz canvas ripstop tarp and couldn’t be happier. It’s heavy-duty, strong, and the tie-downs are solid. The fabric quality is much better than tarpaulins we’ve bought elsewhere before. Service was great the whole way through. We also saw they do trailer canopies, so got one organised as well, and that turned out spot on. Heavy-duty PVC, zips and all the bells n whistles. Very happy and would definitely recommend LJ Covers

Mining And Heavy Industry FAQs

Got a question? Find answers to common questions about our services, products and custom solutions.

Yes. We source FRAS fabric from certified suppliers and provide the manufacturer’s test certification and technical data sheet with the finished item. Where your specification nominates a particular standard or product, we work to that nomination.

A geomembrane is an impermeable barrier — it stops liquid passing through. A geotextile is permeable and is used for separation, filtration, drainage or as a protective cushioning layer. Containment applications usually need a geomembrane, often with a geotextile underlay protecting it from puncture. We can supply either or both as one package.

Yes. Everything is measured and manufactured to the actual tank, structure or site area, including inlet and outlet positions, internal fittings and fixing details. We do not work from nominal sizes.

Yes. Shutdown and breakdown work is scheduled against the window available and prioritised where the timeframe is tight. Give us the shutdown dates at quoting stage and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet them.

Yes. On-site consultation can be organised— measuring the actual structure and assessing the exposure conditions before anything is specified. We can provide certificates of currency for public liability $20 Million and workers compensation. Site-specific inductions are completed before attendance.

We build custom pallets and crating to suit the item. The fold or roll pattern, packing method and pallet dimensions are set so the material arrives without creasing, abrasion or coating damage, and can be handled with the equipment available on site.
